What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file a website stores on your device so it can recognise that device on a later page or a later visit. Some are set by us and some by the analytics service we use.

This site keeps its cookie use small. We set one ourselves, to remember the choice you make about the others. Everything else sits in a single category, analytics, and nothing in it is written until you accept it.

Essential cookies

One cookie records the decision you take in the settings panel. There is no switch for it, because turning it off would mean we could not remember that you had turned anything off.

Analytics cookies

Accepting these lets Google Analytics and PostHog run with storage. They count page views, where a visit came from, and events such as starting a tool or downloading a report, which is how we work out which pages help a reader and which ones need rewriting. Until you accept, the Google Analytics script is never fetched and none of its cookies exist.

PostHog is the exception worth stating plainly, because it does something before you decide. It runs a cookieless count for every visitor: page views, referrer and country, with the visitor id held in memory for a single page view and discarded when you leave. It writes nothing to your device, builds no profile, and records no session. Accepting analytics is what moves it to the stored ph_* entries in the table above, so return visits join up. Session recording is switched off at both tiers.

Google Analytics records no answers you give in the tools and nothing you type into a form. Your answers are worked out in your browser and reach us only if you tick the box asking for a walkthrough, which our privacy notice covers.

If you reject, you can still read and use everything on this site. If you accept and later change your mind, Google Analytics stops from your next page, and PostHog drops back to the cookieless count with its stored entries removed.

What is kept outside cookies?

The tools hold your answers in your browser while you work through them, so a reload does not lose your place. That information stays on your device and clearing your browser data for this site removes it.

Changing your choice

Select cookie settings here or in the footer of any page and the same panel opens again, with the categories, the table above, and buttons to accept, reject or save a mix. A change takes effect straight away.

Your browser gives you a second route. Every major browser lets you see the cookies a site has stored, delete them and block new ones, under a privacy or site-data section of its settings. Deleting ours deletes the record of your choice too, so we will ask again on your next visit.

Updates to this policy

We review this policy whenever the cookies or the analytics service on the site change.
